ALL GENERATIONS DISCUSSION GROUP meets February 14 at 11:45 a.m. in the Parlor. People
from all generations are welcome to come and share in the discussion based on
the premise that our congregation needs to reach out to younger generations
while continuing to engage older generations and our heritage.
OVERBROOK BIBLE STUDY group will convene on Tuesday. February 16th in
the Parlor at 9:30 a.m. Bill Leety will lead the study of Lesson 5 "Can
War Be Holy?" using Joshua 6:1-8; 10:16-11: 23 as reference with the key
idea being "War, even when it is necessary to defend ourselves or the weak
or the oppressed, is never the will of God." You are welcome to attend.
OUR WEDNESDAY LENT SERIES starts February 24
and runs through March 24. Soup suppers served at 6:15 p.m. in the South
Parlor will be followed by a presentation and study on Isaiah by Dr. Paul Kim,
Professor at The Methodist Theological School of
Ohio. Dr. Kim’s expertise is in Old Testament
prophetic literature and Biblical Theology. His presentations will explore issues of
redemption, justice, lament and how we can use the lens of film to make sense
of these topics during our Lenten journey. Please come and join us for soup,
conversation, and interesting presentations. Consider it one of
your Lent habits in preparation for Easter! Soup
is served beginning at 6:15 until 7 p.m., so if you can’t arrive until 6:40 a
place at the table, and a bowl of hot soup are still yours. From 7 to 7:15 we have evening prayer in the
Parlor. Presentations and studies are 7:15 to 8:15.

HAITIAN PROTRAITS
- Watercolor Reflections on 8 Years of
Medical Mission Work in Fort Liberte, Haiti by Jeri Ellis Platt are displayed in the Parlor from now until mid
April. Since 2000 Jeri Platt, member of
Glen Echo Presbyterian Church, has traveled annually, and travels this month,
to Haiti to assist in medical mission in a village near the border with the
Dominican Republic. Her watercolor
paintings depict the poverty and wealth she sees in people she meets in this
mission. Brochure in the Parlor
contains an artist’s statement and listing of the paintings on display.
CONVERSATION TIME AFTER WORSHIP - Did something from the music, prayers or sermon
strike a chord in you today? Would you like to have a conversation about
it with other people who are thinking about these issues? You’re invited
to step into the Chapel after the service for Conversation Time After Worship. This is an opportunity for
worshipers to share what the service has placed on their hearts and minds,
listen to others’ responses, and discuss their questions. The chapel will
be set aside for these conversations for around a half an hour after worship.
Here are some questions that
may prompt our conversations this week:
God calls and Isaiah
responds, “Woe is me – I have unclean lips.” When Jesus calls, Peter kneels and
counters, “Get away from me, Lord, for I’m sinful.” Paul writes of God’s call,
“I’m unfit to be called an apostle…” To be holy means to be set apart like good
china (in contrast to “everyday dishes”).
·
What obstacles have stood between God’s/Christ’s call
and your willingness to be set apart in service of God and Jesus Christ?
·
When have you experienced the Holy in your life? When
have you been resistant to being in the presence of God’s holiness?
