CHIMES & CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP
LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE
*CALL TO WORSHIP on 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11/wrl
This is the good
news we have received and proclaim,
in which we stand and through which we are being saved:
that Christ died for our sins in accordance
with scripture,
that he was buried,
and was raised on the third day in accordance with scripture;
and that he appeared to Cephas and the
good women, then to the twelve.
Then he appeared to many faithful sisters
and brothers, and to James;
then to all the apostles, and later to
the apostle Paul.
Standing in this good news, confident in faith,
we gather to pass on to others this grace, and to praise
God.
*HYMN # 344 Christ of the Upward Way
*CONFESSION OF WHO WE ARE
on Luke 5
Jesus says to the fishermen, “Put out into the deep
water….”
God whose Son calls
disciples to fish for people:
we’re creatures whose comfort is in the
shallows—
we maintain appearance and avoid core
matters;
we seek quick fix, and forsake long
obedience;
we listen to so many experts, and grow
deaf to your voice.
Compel
us, Lord, from comfort zones to deep water.
Tangle our nets with others’ ways.
Move us to answer your call, knowing that
we are in the same boat
with Jesus,
who protects, preserves, and rescues those he calls.
(time for
silent, personal confession) Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF WHOSE WE ARE & THE PEACE from the Heidelberg Catechism:
I believe that the
Son of God though his Spirit and Word,
out
of the entire human race, from the beginning of the world to its end,
gathers, protects,
and preserves for himself a community chosen for eternal life
and united in true faith.
And
of this community I am and always will be a living member.
In that faith, we thank God for mercy,
and
spread that mercy in words and gestures of peace.
The
peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
Peace
be with you.
The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), one of the standards in our Book of Confessions, was the first Reformed
confession to appear in America, carried by Dutch explorers to Manhattan Island in 1609, and used by Reformed
Christians in the middle colonies who had left Scotland,
Hungary, and Germany.
