GATHER
IN GOD’S NAME
IN SILENCE from Neal E. Lloyd, “A Prayer for Lent,” Praying Out Loud
We
praise because we have found God not unwilling to intervene,
even
though God’s face may be veiled from us and we may not recognize God’s hand.

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP from a prayer of Peter Marshall
Lord, when we long for life without difficulties,
remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary

and diamonds are made under

LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE
*CALL TO WORSHIP
Psalm 27: 1, 3-4 (NRSV)
The Lord is my light and my salvation:
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
Of whom shall I be afraid?
Though an army encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear.
Though war rise up against me,
Yet I will be confident.
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek
after:
To live in the house of the Lord all the
days of my life,
to
behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in God’s temple.
*PROCESSIONAL HYMN # 482 Praise
ye the Lord, the Almighty
*RESPONSIVE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Carlos Wilton
Lord, we confess that we have spoken about you
when it would
have been better to stay silent; and we have kept silent
when we
should have said a word in your favor.
Lord, have mercy.
We have preferred to think of
our “cross” as the sum total of our worries,
rather than the hard but essential task that we alone can do
for you.
Christ,
have mercy.
We have been quick to
complain about how bad things are,
and have quite forgotten that all things, in heaven and on
earth,
are in your benevolent hands.
Lord,
have mercy.
Forgive us, Lord, for all our
sin: the thoughts, words and deeds we have voiced,
and the secret offenses hidden in our hearts. Do it, we pray,
for Jesus’ sake.
Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF WHOSE WE ARE & THE PEACE
As a parent consoling and stilling a child, so God treats
us.
God takes our sin further away then east is
from west.
In the love and mercy of Jesus Christ, we are
forgiven.
Thank God!
The peace of the forgiving Lord be with you all.
Peace be with you.
(worshipers share
words and gestures of the peace of Christ)
