GATHER
IN GOD’S NAME
In
silence, put aside distraction, as we with God span time & distance.
IN SILENCE Ephesians 4: 4-6
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called
to the one hope when you
were called—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God
and Father of all, who is
over all and
through all and in all.
OPENING SENTENCES 1 Corinthians 12: 25-26 (The Message)
The way God designed our bodies is a model for
understanding our lives
together as a church:
every part dependent on every other
part, the parts we see and parts we don’t.

UNISON CALL TO WORSHIP (verse 1)
They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our
Love
LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE
*CALL TO WORSHIP on Psalm 19/DB
This is the day
that the Lord has made!
(Lectern Side) God’s glory is on tour in
the skies, the Creator’s craft
on exhibit across the horizon.
(All) Our Redeemer’s revelation is
whole. It pulls our lives together.
(Pulpit Side) The Spirit’s signposts and
life-maps are right and clear.
They show the way to joy.
God’s Word is more precious than a diamond set between
emeralds: More
comforting than red, ripe strawberries in the spring!
(All) Let us worship God, our rock and
redeemer, now and always!
*HYMN # 435 We All Are One in Mission
*CONFESSION OF WHO WE ARE AND WHO WE SERVE 1 Cor. 12/DB
We are Christ’s body:
not one member but many, ordained to serve as God chooses.
People from Cameroon and from Iowa, nurses and
librarians, each made to be unique,
yet all baptized in one Spirit. In wisdom
God calls us to care for each member. If one
member suffers, all suffer together with him; if one
member is honored, all rejoice
together with her. God also commands us to reach
compassionately into the world to
care for the sick, shelter those left homeless by
hurricanes and earthquakes, comfort
those who grieve, and befriend the lonely and those
lost in the catastrophe of poverty.
We confess our weakness. We are not able to accomplish
these tasks alone. You are our
strength, O Lord. Your Spirit brings healing peace to
all in need and refreshes this body
with the water of life so we might together fulfill
your holy call to service. Thanks be to
God! In Jesus
Christ we are redeemed.
*PASSING THE PEACE
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ who was and is and
is to come, be with you all.
Peace be
with you.
(worshipers exchange words and gestures of
peace)

LITANY FOR GOD’S PEOPLE IN TIMES OF DISTRESS, THE
LORD’S PRAYER
O God, who is Creator,
Redeemer and Sustainer.
Hear our
prayer.
Lord God, we stand in awe at
the perfect order and the power of your creation. We ask that you assure
us of our power, as part of
your perfect creation, to do what is right and good.
We praise
you for the goodness of your creation and thank you for your trust in our
faithfulness.
God of even the fury of
storms and earthquakes, we give thanks that you are steadfast in your love,
that we might approach you as
our strength and refuge.
We give
thanks for your steadfast love, and pray for the comfort of your loving
presence
among
those who suffer.
For those who struggle in the
wake of earthquakes in Haiti, we ask, Lord, that you extend your hand in
support.
Have mercy
on them, Lord.
For those who suffer from
other storms of weather, and from personal storms of illness, war, grief, and
a struggling economy, Lord we
ask for relief.
May they
know the power of your healing love.
Almighty God, we ask that
those who work to bring relief to survivors in Haiti and elsewhere be filled
with courage, wisdom,
compassion, strength and whatever else they may need in order to deliver
comfort, healing and love.
Guide
their actions and their words, and keep them safe, dear God.
Lord, we know that those who
suffer through a disaster experience differing emotions. Some feel
shock, panic, and fear. Some
have feelings of anger, vengeance and retribution. Some may simply
wish to hide or even to die.
Help them and help all of us to know that you do not desert us despite our
feelings. Give to them and to
us a spark of hope when we need it most.
We give
thanks that you do not leave us alone, but long for our wholeness in you.
God, in mystery and silence
you are present in our lives, bringing new life out of destruction, hope out
of despair, growth out of
difficulty. Help us to see you in the unfolding of all our lives. Help us to
attend to the gentle guidance
of your Spirit, that we may know the joy you give your people.
Give us
eyes, ears, hearts, and hands that can both recognize and do your work in the
world with
love and joy.
Mighty God, whose Word we
trust, whose Spirit enables us to pray, hear our prayers that we might
further your purposes for the
earth; through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray …
