Service for the Lord’s Day,

                                                     May 23, 2010 - 10:30 a.m.

                                                               PENTECOST

                                                   GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

IN SILENCE                                                     Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Toward the Future, p. 86-87

            The day will come, when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides, and

            gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day,

            for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP                                              Mary Sue Gast, from Touch Holiness

            We do not give easy or unthinking response to this day. For today we ask

            God’s Spirit to fill us, that we may prophesy, dream dreams and see visions.

            Today is a summons to be touched by holy fire.

                        Even now, the flames may dance above our heads;

                        even now the flames may be burning in our hearts,

                        animating us, leaving us no peace until God’s justice and peace

                        fill the earth as the waters fill the seas.

CHIMES, CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP & LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE

*CALL TO WORSHIP                                                                 from Psalm 104 (The Message)

     God, my God, how great you are! Beautifully, gloriously robed,

     dressed up in sunshine, and all heaven stretched out for your tent.

          What a wildly wonderful world, God!

          You made it all, with Wisdom at your side.

     All the creatures look expectantly to you, to give them their meals on time.

     You come and they gather around; you open your hand and they eat from it.

          Take back your Spirit and they die; revert to original mud.

          Send out your Spirit and they spring to life…

     Oh, let me sing to God all my life long, sing hymns to God as long as I live!

          Oh, let my song please him; I’m so pleased to be singing to God.

          Oh my soul, Bless God!

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN # 288                                         I Sing the Mighty Power of God

*CONFESSION OF WHO WE ARE                                                                 Chalice Worship

            Almighty God, we confess that we have sinned against you;

                        for we have denied your saving presence in our lives,

                        and we have grieved your Holy Spirit.

            Come to us in the fire of your love,

                        and set our minds on the things of the Spirit

                        that we may bear the Spirit’s fruit in love and joy and peace;

                        through Jesus Christ our Lord. (personal confession) Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON AND THE PEACE

            Friends, the Good News is that God has poured out the Spirit upon all

            and invites us to turn to his ways through Christ our Savior. Christ is our peace:

            Let us live in his love.

                      (worshipers exchange words and gestures of the peace of Christ)
